How Long Does an Uncontested Divorce Take?

News / How Long Does an Uncontested Divorce Take?

Even if both parties agree a divorce it still takes about six months to go through.

This is because the full procedure for a divorce must still be followed and several documents have to be sent to the court and approved. There is also a compulsory wait of just over six weeks between the last two steps.

Virtually all divorces happen by post through a few regional courts, but these courts are very busy and if the documents are not completed corretly then delays can snowball and things take much longer.

A professionally handled divorce usually costs a few hundred pounds and can ensure matters are dealt with as quickly as possible. Also, other matters such as an agreed financial settlement can be dealt with. The law on divorces is due to change soon but the timescales are unlikely to get any shorter and there will still be paperwork to deal with.
